"really nice looking artwork from Frankum" - Forbidden Planet International Blog.
Well, as you've probably guessed, I like to draw. It really is as simple as that. I feel that it is my job to provide entertainment and escapisim for others. I hope that I do, otherwise I'm not doing my job. My artwork has earned me an Eagle Award nomination (I didn't pay them, honest). Recent comic book clients include FutureQuake, Zarjaz, Top Shelf Productions, Massacre for Boys, Thank you... Ron, Dr WTF?! and Too Much Sex and Violence. I'm currently working on illustrations for a novel titled Strangelands & Troublesome Things, written by Saraha Coe. I'm also busy doodling away on a collection of poems by Stephanie Stanton, illustrating storyboards, design work, teaching and, well, anything that grabs me by the collar. I especially enjoy celebrating the written word through drawing and documenting 'life' via my sketchbook.
I have had a love for drawing ever since I can remember. It always felt like a natural thing for me to do. Visits to the galleries in London as a child was always a jaw dropping experience for me. It still is. Watching films such as Flash Gordon, The Magnificent Seven and Star… (hang on, I’ll remember the name of it in a minute) and strong doses of Spiderman, Victor and The adventures of Tintin comic books as a child, started to combine into one big melting pot. Still to this day, I get a huge thrill out of anything that is creative. I was (and I still am) at my happiest when I’m drawing and being creative.
Once I’d left school, I attended KIAD Canterbury, KIAD Rochester and Swindon College of Art and Design, collecting various certificates along the way (I even achieved the ‘artist’ badge whilst in the Boy Scouts). After graduating, I had my illustrations published in various publications as well as completing the odd mural (the building has been pulled down since and I’m still a bit peeved that they never gave me my back my work. Vandals!) and other various design work.
My influences are broad, whether it’s to do with style, composition or concept. They range from various illustrators, artists past and present, film directors, architects and even my friends children (they have such a wonderful vision on life and remind me of why I like drawing in the first place).
As well as drawing I enjoy other activities such as cycling, reading, walks, observing nature and quality time with my girlfriend Sam and my son Jude, as well as friends and family. They're a key part to my life. I also run my own personal bar called 'Frannings' (it can get quite creative in there as well!). Music also plays an important role in my life and in my work. Whether it be the wonderful string arrangements of the Penguin Café Orchestra, the poetry and quirky tunes of John Hegley, the genius of Frank Zappa, the vibrancy of Burning Spear, the ballsy Kiss or the thunderous Slayer, it all enhances what I do as a person.
I live in Gillingham, Kent (where I was born and bred) and I’m a devoted supporter of the ‘mighty’ Gills (Gillingham Football Club).
